This is an original linoleum carving collage using a vintage topographic map of the Elk Mountains in Colorado (c. 1940s) and in particular, the Lake Irwin (Lake Brennan) area above the town of Crested Butte. The block is hand carved then printed on a variety of old found paper, every piece is cut out and then re glued back together to get the finished piece. All the color you see, is actually the tone of the paper the block was printed on.

John Fellows’ signature “contemporary folk” style weaves together layers of found paper, graphic block prints and handwritten text to create an old time, hands-on feel. he collects a variety of found paper, maps and books dating from the 1880’s to the present to create unique linoleum carving collages that while at the very base reflect his personal experiences, are more like a brief glimpse into someone else’s story.
